Johnson’s Jukebox Volume 1. HB 1st and 2nd Gen Punk music…

Time to lighten up things around here…

Johnson’s Jukebox.

An exciting new semi- regular feature here at the Sledge when I get tired of ranting…

This edition… Huntington Beach Punk, 1st and 2nd Gen…

Sadly, no recorded output exists of many of the early HB Bands.. The Screwz, The Voyeurs, Idols, Slashers, and other first gen bands to emerge in the late 70’s. There is some that survives. Other bands based in OC seem to have laid down some recorded record of their existence with a few going on to actual stardom…

Lets start off with one from HB’s Original Punks… the ones all the Surfwear designers should pay royalties to for their thrift store style innovations… The Crowd- “Right Time” off of the World Apart L.P. and the reworked Beach Blvd compilation… an instant classic. ( I still own a test pressing of this record in a hand lettered sleeve… gotta be worth somethin ya think?) Best backyard parties …. ever.

The Crowd

Next up… The Klan…” Pushin Too Hard” …  I played little league baseball at Robinwood with Guitarist “Stevie Noise” – Steve Houston. The Klan disintegrated after the release of this single.. I couldn’t find any pix of the Klan… perhaps I can scan my Baseball team pix from the 70’s…

TSOL  emerged in the wake of the very first bands on the scene.. the were considered “Black Jacket” punks as opposed to the “Day-Glo Beach Punks” that preferred good time party bands like  The Crowd.  Guitarist Ron Emory and Bassist Mike Roche attended High School over at Wintersburg along with a few of my friends who wound up there because they preferred to surf instead of study….Code Blue…was a bit much..lets hear

TSOL – “Sounds of Laughter”

The Vandals. 2nd Gen HB. I remember sitting on a couch in a crappy apartment off of Lake St.  that my friend John Stange shared with Steve ” Stevo” Jensen in the early 80’s . He was talking about starting a band… This is what emerged…

Vandals- ” Anarchy Burger”

The Blades…For some reason I never saw these guys play. Not sure why but they were part of the HB landscape. Perhaps I saw them somewhere and just dont remember any of the details of that particular evening…it wouldnt be a Stretch for me…lol

The Outsiders…Saw these guys in Seal Beach at a house party that turned into a war with the cops…in full riot gear. They were from Surfside I believe and were part of the HB crew that developed a reputation for insanity and violence…

Outsiders -“Government Cloud”

China White was another 2nd Gen band with a reputation for agressive behavior by thier following…another band I never caught live and only became familiar with them after picking up a copy of the record that was released by Frontier with the Flyboys on side A and China White on side B.

China White – ” Addiction”

Lets listen to JFA. Although they technically hail from Arizona, JFA has deep roots in HB… Guitarist . Don Pendleton produced the best punk mixtapes in HB and was solely responsible for turning a whole lot of people onto great music. The Flyboys played 3 songs in his tiny living room off of Goldenwest and Heil before the HBPD showed up and took his brother Mike to Jail. I was the only one with enough cash in my  pocket to post his bail.. LOL Don accompanied me on my 2nd expedition  with Ken Warden to surf XL waves in Puerto.Escondido.In a weird twist of fate, Dons lead singer Brian Brannon is married to a local SJW, Jennifer Brannon.

JFA – “Skateboard Anarchy” ( This anarchy thing was popular…lol)

*Disclaimer* My kid rides a classic JFA Pool deck skate…(autographed by Don no less…)thanks Don…Liam J. keepin it in the family…I borrowed this skate from the kid for a couple of runs in the Pool over at Vans…got coping in the first 2 runs before I became disengaged on the 3rd run..freefell to the bottom and tore the cartilage in my chest….

Liam Johnson laying it down HB style after only riding a skateboard for three weeks…

And taking his first downhill run ever at a secret spot in Central HB…

Speaking of the Flyboys…they hailed from Arcadia but had cross connections with the HB scene…Drummer Denis Walsh worked at System Auto Wash on Beach and Warner where half my friends worked drying cars for tips ( try that now if you dont speak Spanish) The connection resulted in the lll fated living room show and eventually to the addition of Walsh to the ranks of The Crowd after the Flyboys self destructed.. Pendleton would go on to cover this song with JFA and put his own unique take on it..

Flyboys-“Theme Song”

JFA – “Theme Song” Live

If anybody has a link to recorded output from the first and second gen bands that I havent stumbled on to…shoot me a comment. That was a long time ago and the memories are slightly hazy…

Next up on Johnsons Jukebox…The Rest of OC…Social D, Adolescents, Agent Orange…all your old faves..

Got a request? Drop me a comment…

*Sledge Update*  The Crowd and TSOL are still putting out compelling music..

These guys are my age..I guess you never really get it out of your system…

Check out The Crowd – “Im not Happy Here”…

TSOL – ” I wanted to see you”

“Hey dude where you from?”

Big smile…

And you?
